Despite the commercial cheesy-ness factor of most pumpkin patches within a fifty mile radius of a large metropolitan area, I love visiting farms in October. Bob’s Corn Maze was packed with people, had too many cutesy little cut-outs for stuffing your child into, and charged $25 for the big pumpkins but the pony rides, apple cider donuts, and huge selection of pumpkins more than made up for it.
We communed with the livestock. Ben had his first encounter with a barb-wire fence that will not soon be forgotten.
Following the obligatory apple cider donut and bulk purchase of apples, it was time to find our little cowboy a hoss. Bob’s is one of the few places (besides Remlinger, which is $$$) that has pony rides. Chris and I were careful not to mention the word horse until we determined that there was no minimum age or weight for the riders. That would have been one very disappointed little cowboy.
Actually, we didn’t think the pony ride was going to happen at all. Ben threw a fit upon arrival as he was insisting on the brown horse, not the white one. Look whose parents caved and requested a pony change:
We bypassed the corn shooter, the corn maze, the tractor rides (too long a line), and the face painter in favor of the pumpkin patch.
Finally, the perfect one was selected. Total price: $1.
Ben is so over smiling for cameras these days.
I’ll give you my fake sad face instead!
And now I’m adding in downcast eyes!
Tough luck, mama, this is all you’re gettin’.

Sonja
