My cousin Sarah just sent me this link.
See what happens when a beekeeper decides to place a glass bell jar on the top of a hive. It's so rare that we get to peek into the inner workings of an active colony to watch the comb-building process. What a fascinating experiment.
Observation hives are notoriously difficult to keep. At one point in my parent's beekeeping career, my dad had a small pipe leading from the garden, through the house and into to a glass hive in our dining room. I'll have to ask him about the success of that project.
