Ex-UW pair take U.S. boat to gold in Beijing
BEIJING -- Halfway through the race, coxswain Mary Whipple screeched out a little crew history:"It's for the 1984 girls -- do 'em proud!"Say no more.
The women in the eight-oared shell knew the cue -- especially Anna Michelson Cummins. She was the engine, Whipple the driver. They have spent nine years together in boats, starting as bewildered freshmen in 1999 at the University of Washington.
