After our adventures with the little dog (who is waiting for someone to adopt him at our local shelter, contact me if you're interested), Chris and I had pretty much decided that we didn't need any additional pets. Our goldfish had other plans. I took a scoop of the pond water the other day and was horrified to discover mosquito larvae wiggling around in the cup. Usually the fish do a pretty good job of eating them. West Nile virus is a pretty big deal down here and I didn't want to add to the problem. On the verge of tossing out the old water and refilling the pond, I took a closer look and decided that they weren't mosquitos but little fish! How does one make such a mistake? It's actually not all that difficult from a distance as they are the same size, shape, and color (see below). The two move quite differently however and that was the key. So, we have baby goldfish! I moved them to a large jar so they wouldn't follow in the path of the mosquito larvae and be eaten by their parents. I think we have about 6 or 7 of them and hopefully some of them will survive .
